Nothing About Youth Without Youth

1Hood Media Academy education programs are more than one-off learning opportunities. We offer our program participants more than 40 opportunities for engagement every year. As such, we design our programs through a cohort model, which allows us to create community with and among the young people we engage with. Participants in our education programs become well-equipped young leaders in their communities and positive role models and sources of support for their peers. As nonprofit programs for Black youth, these opportunities help participants build leadership, confidence, and community connection.

Our flagship program is where it all began. Following our media literacy curriculum, youth craft their own narratives through media, identify misinformation, and advocate for causes they care about.

We keep us safe.

We Keep Us Safe (WKUS) is our youth violence prevention program with a cohort of roughly 15 young people ages 16 to 26 who take part in weekly sessions over a period of roughly five months. Participants engage in conversations around community safety, enact community service projects, and create media to share on social platforms, highlighting topics like mental health, safety, and civic engagement to promote positive content for their peers. Meals and compensation are provided to WKUS cohort members at each session.

fridays on deck

Fridays on Deck (FOD) is a multigenerational event series for families and youth held in historically underserved neighborhoods of Pittsburgh with higher levels of gun violence. Held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Fridays during the summer months, FOD provides a safe space for participants to build community and engage with resources related to education, art, and human services over a free meal with great music. FOD is planned and delivered as part of our We Keep Us Safe cohort’s community service initiative, connecting youth violence prevention programs with youth community service programs rooted in care.

media academy

1Hood Media Academy offers media literacy education and creation training, opportunities to explore media through the lens of social justice, and cultivates the positive personal development of young creatives while providing a multidisciplinary platform for them to craft their own narratives. This program seeks to address the issue of youth navigating media in this ever-changing digital landscape, ensuring that our next generation of leaders and creators can build media literacy skills and utilize this all-too-necessary tool to the fullest extent. student voices

1Hood Media, in collaboration with Allies for Children and the Grable Foundation, is elevating student voices. To hear firsthand how COVID-19 impacted Black and Brown students and how these experiences are shaping their future outlooks on learning, the organizations produced a documentary directed by Emmai Alaquiva and a five-day virtual conference. The goal is to develop resources for school districts, community organizations, educators, families, and students to move the needle forward on culturally affirming curriculum and teaching practices and to close the digital divide.
