1Hood advances for racial equity and social justice through an integrated model of arts, education, media, and civic engagement. Our arts programming strives to uplift, platform, and support artists of the global majority to maximize eyes on their work and expand impact.

A performer dressed in a white fur coat and high heels is crouching on stage with one knee bent, while an audience watches from the darkened background. The performer is illuminated by colorful stage lighting, and the audience sits in a curved arrangement, watching attentively.

Our arts programming expands the creative capacity of young people and supports the development of culturally relevant, community-rooted learning experiences and performances.

We provide established and emerging artists, especially those from historically underrepresented communities, with the tools, mentorship, and resources to grow as both creatives and changemakers.

The Artivist Showcase Series is a cornerstone program that cultivates support and a stage for artists committed to social change through art activism.

These intimate performances provide musical artists a unique opportunity to display their talents, as well as a third space for Pittsburghers in which they experience what our region’s arts and culture space has to offer.

Select

Select is our artist professional development workshop series built to support artists in the business of creating. Free and open to the public, each Select event features a topic aimed at artists to expand their artistry or develop tangible skills to better support their craft. The sessions are led by leaders in their industry in our Blaxk Box theater.

Blending the disciplines of art and activism, the Artivist program is designed for emerging and established creatives, particularly artists of the global majority, who are using their craft to amplify justice-oriented narratives.

Over the course of 18 months, participants receive mentorship, stipends, and structured opportunities to grow both creatively and professionally. Each cohort of 10–15 artivists receives a $5,000 stipend to support their work, $1,000 in available funds for professional development, a showcase as part of the Artivist Showcase Series in 1Hood’s Blaxk Box Theater in Pittsburgh’s centrally located North Oakland neighborhood, as well as photography and video of them and their work to amplify their portfolio.

Kaleidoscope is creating opportunities for established musical artists to create media to promote their work to a larger audience. The Kaleidoscope series invites artists of various genres, including Hip Hop, Soul, Jazz and more to film live performances in our space to a live audience. Kaleidoscope artists get the space, and the full complement of 1Hood’s Media capability to document a performance that can live in their reels and records for promotion elsewhere. We get a great performance, they receive a professionally captured video of their work which helps the artists promote well beyond 1Hood.
