Mutual Aid and Community Support in Pittsburgh
Through 1Hood’s work with Community Care, we meet people where they are. We show up outside Allegheny County Jail, in unhoused encampments, and at local shelters across Pittsburgh. Together, we provide food, supplies, housing referrals, and trusted support to neighbors facing reentry and homelessness.

HOW WE SHOW UP
Community Care was born out of a simple truth: the system wasn't showing up, so we did. Founded in 2022 by Muhammad Ali Nasir (MAN-E) as Community Care & Resistance In Pittsburgh and brought under the 1Hood umbrella in 2025, the program was built as a direct response to the unmet needs of people returning from Allegheny County Jail and those experiencing homelessness.
Every week, our team tables outside Allegheny County Jail — meeting people the moment they're released, often with no support system waiting for them. We also conduct weekly outreach to unhoused encampments and local shelters, distributing food, weather-appropriate clothing, hygiene products, and harm-reduction supplies like Naloxone. Beyond direct aid, we help with legal navigation, housing referrals, and emergency care — and we participate in jail oversight and homeless advisory boards to address the root causes, not just the symptoms.
our Impact in action
Since its inception, Community Care has remained a trusted presence in the community, with over 8,500 contacts made annually, 250 people reached each week, and 800+ volunteer hours powering it all each year. Community Care has become a trusted, consistent presence for some of Pittsburgh's most vulnerable residents — showing up with dignity and tangible support when few others do.
In the winter of 2025, that trust was put to the test. Community Care partnered with the City of Pittsburgh and Allegheny County to engage the 250 people living in downtown and South Side encampments. Because of the relationships we had already built, 80% of them moved into shelter or housing. That's what it looks like to meet people where they are.
