1Hood Media is opening its doors again for 1Hood Media Academy this April. Founded by Jasiri X, 1Hood Media Academy is an experiential tool that helps youth and young adults to critically analyze media messages, broaden their experience of media, and develop innovative skills in creating their own media messages. The project’s mission is to improve self-image, dispel stereotypes, encourage entrepreneurialism, and provide a positive forum of self-expression in a field where African Americans are either underrepresented or misrepresented in media.
The program is intended to raise the consciousness of participants, media literacy and activism. In addition mixed media and performance arts, programming will now include a visual arts component encompassing graphic design, videography and photography. With session occuring quarterly, classes will be held weekly on Tuesdays from 4-6 PM.
Beyond discussions, the Academy utilizes lectures, guest speakers, field trips, media mentoring and hands on training in new media production. It addresses media education through 6 units: Contemporary Youth Imagery and Current Events, Visual Imagery and Demographic, Advertising, Music, Television and Film.This alternative education program thereby serves a dual purpose of equipping the communities youth with the proper tools for self expression, as well as, occupying their time with positive influences with a specific goal oriented agendas
Each quarter, media creation is based around a project which will offer students the best opportunity to showcase their work. Previous projects have included a videos featuring and prepared by Media Academy participants, events and mixtapes. In addition to participant education and cultivation, we celebrate the accomplishments of the students, as well as engage parents and the community through panel discussions and performances. The program culminates with student and alumni performances at our annual festival, 1Hood Day.
1Hood Media Academy is open to all youth and young adults from 14-24. The program is offered at no cost to participants. If interested in enrolling in the March session, apply here now.
